EDITOR’S CORNER

Dear Customer,

For those of us in the shipping industry it has not come as a surprise to read last week that India's exports were up by 38% in Quarter 1 - 2011, as there have been positive signs since the beginning of the year on the demand upswing globally. As a result, demand for equipment and space at the ports, especially at Nhava Sheva, was greater than many of the preceding years. The demand for equipment is not just an Indian phenomenon, it is now global. While Maersk is one of the few shipping lines to be proactively investing in the fabrication of new equipment - dry and reefers alike, we foresee a continued shortage in the near future, simply because of the increased demand.

As Maersk Line, we have been aggressively promoting capacity to the USA West Coast in India and Sri Lanka, something we have not been able to do for years now. With space between China and the USA West Coast opening up a little, cargo from India and Sri Lanka has suddenly 'found a home'.

With the cashew season on, our Cashew Express is all set to welcome cargo and is specifically designed for customers to ensure excellent transit time in these crucial weeks of cashew imports.

Your Chennai Express (CHX) from Chennai to the Far East will now make 3 additional port calls at Qingdao, Xingang and Ningbo, which means that customers now have a window into North China and increased coverage to East China. Read on.
